My Weight Loss Journey with Dr Gert du Toit

I am a 44-year-old woman, married with three beautiful children.
For many years, I lived with obesity. At first, I thought it was okay because I could still do many of the things other women could do. But deep down, I knew something was not right. As I grew older, I realised that my body was not meant to carry that kind of weight.
Over time, I developed several chronic illnesses, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and thyroid problems. I was injecting insulin and taking many different medications every day. Sometimes, after taking all my medication, I would cry.
Then one day, I saw a television programme about people having weight loss surgery. I spoke to my husband about it, and we agreed that if I could find the right doctor, I would take the next step.
My journey started in 2024. A friend of mine who worked at St Augustine’s Hospital told me about Dr Gert du Toit and how good he is with these types of surgeries. I searched for him online, did my research, and then contacted his rooms to find out more.
From the beginning, his team explained everything so clearly and kindly. I booked an appointment with Dr Du Toit, and he explained all the different surgical options in detail. Together, we chose the procedure that was best suited to me.
I then started my work-up, saw the dietician, and began preparing for my journey. It was not easy, I will not lie, but with the support of my family, friends, and Dr Du Toit’s team, I made it through.
I was very scared, but also excited about the new journey I was about to begin. On the day of my surgery, Dr Du Toit made sure I was comfortable at all times. I thank God for him. He loves his work, and it shows in the way he cares for his patients.
There were challenges along the way, but I made it through because of the support I received from my doctor, my family, and my friends.
It has now been one year, and I have lost so much weight. My starting weight was 187 kg, and I am now 119 kg. This happened within a year, and I am still going strong.
I love the new me.
To anyone who feels ready to take the next step and start their own journey, my advice is simple: go for it. It is the best decision I have ever made. I am living proof that change is possible.
I am so glad I took this route and did not allow fear to stop me. Dr Du Toit and his team are very supportive, and I will always be grateful.
Good luck to anyone who wants to start this journey.
